You’ll still find E36s dominating drift and track days thanks to their awesome weight distribution, solid straight-six engines, and huge aftermarket support. Despite this, they’ve remained one of the most reasonably priced drift cars and make the list of best budget project cars year after year.

Although prices have crept up slightly (haven’t they all?), you can still find decent examples for reasonable money, especially compared to the JDM tax on the likes of Nissan’s S-chassis (or even the USDM 240SX!).

Whether you’re intending to improve your daily-driven street car, build a stripped-out missile, or restore a potential future investment, the E36 delivers. If you need proof of what it’s capable of, look no further than Adam LZ. Despite having numerous awesome cars to choose from, including the Nissan Silvia S15, the E36 remains his weapon of choice as he fights for Formula DRIFT’s top ranks.

From the 318i to the mighty M3, there’s an E36 for every budget and skill level. Weld the differential, throw in a bucket seat, fit some E36 coilovers, and you’re (hopefully) ready for your first drift day. If you want to take things to the next level(s), there’s no shortage of aftermarket parts to choose from.
