At Suzuka racing circuit in Japan, they’ve recently added a world-first ‘drift coaster’ – no, that’s not a typo, there’s no ‘rolling’ here, just pure drifting action!

Suzuka is typically well-known for F1, GT, and superbike racing, but it’s rarely associated with drifting. The sideways action takes place at the more ‘drift-friendly’ Suzuka Twin Circuit, which often has drifting days and also features on the Formula DRIFT Japan calendar.

However, Suzuka recently made up for the lack of drifting with this epic new ‘racing coaster’. But, let’s call it what it really is – the ‘drift coaster’!

Alongside the more commonly-seen big wheel and other typical theme park rides, the world-first ‘Duel GP’ drift coaster lets drivers (over 120cm tall) participate in a drift ‘duel’. The two-seater layout also lets you bring your parents along for the ride.

It’s located adjacent to the start/finish line at the actual circuit and replicates Suzuka’s twists and turns, on a smaller scale, of course!

If you’re expecting the steering wheel to be the typical ‘spinny wheel’ at theme parks that does nothing, you’ll be totally wrong.

Before you get started, there’s a set of instructions explaining how to drift, encouraging “gentle driving” while warning that “rough driving will end up in spinning motions.”

If you execute a perfect drift, you’re provided with a burst of speed, potentially propelling you ahead of your opponent (unless they’re equally talented). On the flip side, a spin-out will cost you as you fall behind.

YouTubers AmusementInsider ventured to Suzuka to give the ride a try, as well as provide a front row ride-on POV in the video below:

While it might look easy, transitioning and weight transfer clearly take some getting used to, especially given the number of spin-outs.

The team confirmed this in the video description, stating:

“The vehicle’s inputs feel very accurate, and getting into a longer drift around a full corner takes a lot of skill, especially through the left-rights which require strong exits and entries to perfect the next turn. They’re hard to get right!”

Now this is what the Mario Kart ride should’ve looked like. Take note, Universal – the kids wanna be able to practice their sideways skills as early as possible!

Suzuka’s theme park also has a huge selection of other unique, one-off car and bike-themed rides that are perfect for younger (or older!) motorsport fans.

If we didn’t already need enough excuses for another trip to Japan, this is yet another addition to the ‘to-do’ list!
