The Crew Is Making A Comeback, But Not How You Might Expect
In a move that sparked fury among its fan base, many of you remember how Ubisoft abruptly announced the end of The Crew on March 31, 2024.

Here’s how it looked the moment they pulled the plug, while multiple players were still enjoying the game:
Now, a community of modders is set to revive the popular street racer, along with its online mode planned for September 15, titled ‘The Crew Unlimited’.
They state their reasoning behind the project on their website:
“On December 14th 2023, Ubisoft has, with no prior warning, taken The Crew off all digital store shelves, then only hours later posted an announcement on their website about the shutdown of The Crew’s servers. The scheduled shutdown date was March 31st, 2024. We had 3 months left to play The Crew.”
“We had to do something.”

‘whammy4’, TCU’s creator, posted the following details showing the current progress:
- The server emulator is feature complete for a 1.0 release.
- The TCU Launcher is complete.
- The TCU Website is ready… You may have noticed that. 🙂
“All that is left to do is to thoroughly test and validate the software, then prepare the release.“
It’s important to note that The Crew Unlimited is not affiliated with Ubisoft or Ivory Tower in any way.
TCU will restore both the single-player and multiplayer features of the game using a server emulator.
Initially, it will only be available for PC, but the team is hoping to roll it out to consoles in the near future. As expected, it’s a bit more challenging due to the nature of consoles.
You will still need to own the game files, even though they hinted “we have absolutely no way to tell a legit copy from a non-legit one, so we just have to let you in.” Likely followed by a wink and a chuckle!
You’ll also need to create new save files for TCU, as they state your original saves will no longer work.
Mods will be fully supported when offline, but you’ll only be able to use cosmetic mods for the online modes.
While it’s fantastic to see the community coming together like this, with whammy4 getting plenty of support to bring it to life, it’s a shame they need to resort to these actions.
Whether Ubisoft will respond is yet to be seen, but given how much they’ve already upset their fans, we’re hoping there won’t be any backlash.
After all, if they hadn’t screwed them over, they wouldn’t have to resort to doing this in the first place.
You can check out everything you need to know about The Crew Unlimited on their official website, where they also have a ‘Download’ page ahead of the planned full release on September 15, 2025.
In case you’ve not already enjoyed what The Crew has to offer, you’re in for a treat. Here’s a throwback to the original game’s official launch trailer:
