Summary
Welcome to Escape Road City, where you’ll take the bank-robbing, cop-dodging chaos of the OG Escape Road game before squeezing it into tighter, more congested city streets packed with more traffic, construction sites, and back alleys that’ll barely fit your car (or fail trying).

It’ll come as no surprise that the same auto-accelerate, top-down formula returns, but the new urban layout makes things even more challenging.
This time around, the vast, wide-open stretches and suburban areas are few and far between. Instead, the endless city streets are crammed with obstacles, parked vehicles, and just about every hazard you can think of. You’ll find yourself frantically searching for the next gap before the cops (inevitably) box you in.

Alongside the typically huge roster of unlockable vehicles you’d expect from the series, spanning from common runabouts to legendary rides with game-changing abilities, there’s plenty to keep you coming back. Collect as much cash as you can to earn surprise new cars, and see how long you can survive as the police, military, and everything in between throw everything they’ve got at you.

Physics

The same arcade-style handling from the original Escape Road carries over, with quick, responsive steering and the same terrifying sense of speed kicks in when you start pushing. It feels fast, and it gets super intense once you’ve got a high-performance car attempting to go full-throttle through the narrow gaps in a desperate bid to escape.
You also get the same drift-friendly physics, which any decent drifter will even more useful than before given how twisty the city layout is. Most of the vehicles will happily get sideways just by holding either direction (there’s no e-brake here, but you won’t need one), and the sportier ones slide around predictably enough to use drifting as a real evasion tactic.

Be sure to practice kicking the rear end out on tight corners to wrong-foot a pursuing cop car and leave them lost in your smoke. If you’ve got a newfound love for drifting through traffic after playing this, you’re in for a treat, as we’ve got a huge selection of dedicated browser-based drift games worth checking out.
That said, not every car is built for sliding. Some of the heavier, bulkier vehicles (like the tank) are better suited to plowing straight ahead and destroying everything in sight, which is an amusing sight when a typical police cruiser tries to ram you into the wall.

While there’s visible damage in Escape Road City, it’s more of an impending explosion system than a full deformation model. You’ll see smoke start billowing from your car as it takes hits, first white, then black. Be warned – once the black smoke turns to flames, it’ll be one more solid impact, and you’re done.
If you’d rather try a game where your cars literally fall to pieces with each crash, Deadly Descent has body panels flying off, wheels detaching mid-race, and suspension dragging along the ground as you desperately try to reach the finish line in fast-paced downhill races.
Graphics

Visually, it’s the same clean, lightweight, blocky, low-poly 3D style that runs through the whole Escape Road series. There’s just more buildings and more things to crash into (and through), and a busier overall feel that matches the city vibes.
If you’ve loved the visuals here, make sure you also check out Polytrack for something totally different. It offers similar styling, but you’ll instead be racing against the clock in an effort to shave milliseconds off your lap times with hundreds of levels (including a track editor to create your own) and global leaderboards to compete on.
Escape Road City vs the rest of the series
We now have three Escape Road titles on the site, with each offering something a little different. Here’s the honest breakdown of where City fits alongside the original Escape Road and Escape Road 2 games.
The OG game is what made the series so popular. You get open city streets, a red sports car to start, daily/weekly/monthly/all-time leaderboards to chase, and enough breathing room to build up speed or outsmart the cops by hiding in the suburbs before things get hectic.

For Escape Road City, you’re handed a yellow pickup truck instead of the starter sports car, and the City is far more populated this time around. There are more objects littering the roads, fewer open areas to escape to, and you’ll need to actively seek out the least likely routes in an effort to survive.
One notable absence in this version is the online leaderboards (which feature in the other two), so your runs are more about personal survival rather than competitive scoring. If you like, you can still challenge your friends to beat you by sharing your score with a screenshot as proof (and no, don’t go editing it!).
Escape Road 2 provides the biggest jump in the series. You now get on-foot gameplay where you can bail out of your ride and hijack other vehicles (including SWAT vans and anything else on the street). You also get to use parachutes, and the increased wanted levels make things get crazier than ever. If you enjoyed this one, ER2 is absolutely worth trying if you’re looking for a little more to do.

How to play Escape Road City
Initial setup
When you load Escape Road City, you’ve just robbed a bank, and at the start, you’ll only have a yellow pickup as your getaway car. The tellers sounded the alarm, the cops are already on their way, and your only job is to survive.

If you want to see what you’ll be saving for, you can click the Vehicle icon in the bottom left of the screen to open the Garage/Showroom. Other than that, the only options are the Pause menu (top left button, or Esc key) and the audio toggle.
Whenever you’re ready, press your desired left/right keys (A and D, or Left/Right arrows) to get the getaway started.
Getting started
The top-down camera gives you a decent view of what’s ahead, but at higher speeds, the city comes at you fast.
You’ll soon notice cash piles scattered around the streets, each worth $10, and you’ll need to collect 10 of them ($100 total) to earn a spin at the slot machine to win a new car.
Early on, the police presence is manageable. Squad cars will chase and try to ram you, but they’re easy enough to dodge with a quick turn down a side street. Keep moving and keep grabbing as much cash as you can.

You’ll soon notice that the pressure ramps up the longer you survive. Jeeps join the chase, followed by surprise roadblocks. Eventually, tanks and helicopters enter the picture, and these are the ones to watch out for. Most pursuers just ram into you, but tanks and helicopters can actually fire missiles at you, so you’ll want to pull all your tricks out of the bag to try and fool them.
Game modes

Escape Road City keeps things simple with a single endless chase mode. There are no separate time trials, challenge modes, or alternative objectives. You’ll simply run from the cops, collect cash, unlock as many cars as you can, and try to survive longer than your last attempt.
If you fancy a change of scenery from relentless police chases, Survival Race flips the concept with online multiplayer battle arenas with parkour challenges, and even car soccer, where you’ll need to once again fight for survival, but this time on collapsing hexagonal platforms. Or, for something completely different, Rocket Goal lets you compete in free Rocket League-style online multiplayer soccer lobbies in your browser.
Escape Road City car list
There are 90 cars to unlock, sorted into four rarity tiers, all earned through the slot machine spin system ($100 per spin). Each spin feels like a lucky dip (or an unlucky one!).
Common cars make up the bulk of what you’ll unlock early on. They’re functional and often fun, but like your starter pickup, they’re often nothing too special in terms of speed or handling.

Rare vehicles start to offer noticeable improvements and often sprinkle in a bit of quirkiness. Alongside a selection of familiar supercars, you’ll also find weird and wonderful options like an RV, a limo, and a dumpster truck.

Epic cars are where things get super fun. While some are faster, sportier, and generally better at sliding through the corners, the likes of the drag racer will be epic in a straight line, but appalling through the tight twisties. Sitting alongside the drag cars are “Dr Drift”, a Hovercraft, a UFO, and a formula racer.

Legendary vehicles are the ones you’ll want to get excited about, and they all come with unique abilities that change how you play.
Here, you’ll find the likes of:
- A bank armored truck that earns cash 5x faster
- A DeLorean-style car that can travel through time
- Vehicles equipped with missiles that blow up police and military vehicles
- A double-decker bus that provides double lives
- An oil tanker that drops oil slicks on the road behind you
… and of course, a tank, just to even the playing field against the military!
If you’d rather try a game where every car is available from the start with zero grinding, Madalin Stunt Cars 3 unlocks its entire 60+ car roster the moment you start, with massive open maps and online lobbies where you can mess around with your friends.
Tuning and upgrades
There’s no tuning or upgrades in Escape Road City. While we’d love to tell you there are turbo kits, coilover setups, and brake upgrades to bolt on, the only real way to tweak your performance is to unlock a new car.
If you’re after a full-blown tuning experience in your browser, Drift Hunters MAX is a perfect pick, with in-depth tuning across 39 cars and 13 tracks. You also get online leaderboards, cross-platform saving, and a unique Drift Attack mode featuring clipping points and judged runs. Or for a lighter alternative that runs on just about any device, the classic Drift Hunters game offers a similar upgrade system with easier progression.
Advanced tips and tricks
Pick your cars based on how you drive, not by speed

Sure, power matters, but durability and handling can often be more useful when it comes to outrunning the cops in the city. If you’re confident sliding around corners to shake the cops, go for something sporty and nimble for quick transitions. Alternatively, you might want to consider a ride that’s better at taking impacts (which there’ll be no shortage of) and keep smashing forward rather than bursting into flames.
Use the brakes as a tactical tool, not a panic button
The faster cars auto-accelerate to ridiculous speeds in a straight line, and in these tight streets, it’s often a recipe for disaster. Consider tapping the brakes to scrub off speed, especially if you feel like a corner is coming up. Remember, your high-performance car is likely fitted with the blocky equivalent of six-pot Brembos, and far better than the stock setup the cops are running, so use that advantage to outmaneuver them. Brake late, pull off a snappy drift, and watch them fly past as the ABS kicks in.
Treat anything blue as a death trap

Be ready – the water in Escape Road City is deceiving. You won’t see any ripples or waves, and there aren’t any barriers to stop you from going in. It’s just a flat blue surface that blends in with the roads when you’re moving fast, and driving into it is instant game over (same for the chasers, too, which can be amusing if you make them go for a dip!). So, whenever you spot blue ahead, steer away immediately (ask me how I know).
Prioritize alleys and back roads over main streets

The wide main roads feel safer, but they’re where the heaviest police presence can build up. Back alleys and narrow side streets are harder to navigate, especially later on when you’ve got the massive military monster trucks chasing you down. Ducking into a tight gap that they can’t follow you through will buy you precious time.
Save reverse for when you really need it

Reverse isn’t only for backing out of dead ends, and you’ll soon realize it’s a useful rescue tool when you’re cornered with seemingly no other option.
Keep an eye out for unique locations

Sometimes you’ll stumble across random locations like a racetrack and these areas will often have loads of cash piles lying around. It’s worth hanging out there as long as you can while making sure you don’t get busted for quick earnings.
Be sure to outsmart the tanks and helicopters
Police vehicles will always try to ram you, which you can survive a few times with the right car. However, tanks and helicopters fire projectiles, dealing far more damage than a regular crash. If they’re nearby, weave around and use the limits of your handling so they can’t get a clear shot. If you’d rather be the one with the rockets next time, Police Chase flips the script and puts the firepower in your hands.
Escape Road City FAQ
What’s the goal in Escape Road City?
Survive as long as possible while collecting cash from piles scattered around the streets. Each $10 pile gets you closer to a $100 slot machine spin for a mystery new ride. The longer you survive, the harder it gets as more aggressive police and military units join the chase.
How do I unlock cars in Escape Road City?
Collect cash during runs until you have $100, then head to the slot machine. Each spin gives you a random car from one of four rarity tiers. There’s no way to pick specific vehicles, so it’s all luck of the draw.
Is Escape Road City available on mobile?
Yes, it works on iOS and Android devices through your mobile browser. Touch controls use the left and right sides of the screen for steering, with a two-finger press for braking/reversing.
What makes Escape Road City different from the original?
You now get tighter, more congested streets with heavier traffic and more obstacles. The starter car is a yellow pickup instead of the red sports car, and there are no leaderboards. The core chase-and-survive gameplay is the same, but the cramped layout forces a different approach to evasion.
Are there any cars with special abilities?
Each legendary-tier vehicle has its own unique ability. These include a bank truck that earns cash five times faster, a DeLorean that can travel through time, missile-equipped vehicles, a double-decker bus with extra lives, and an oil tanker that drops slicks behind you.
Can I play Escape Road City offline?
No, you’ll need an internet connection to play since it runs in your browser. The game is super lightweight, though, so it doesn’t need a fast connection or top-spec device.
