In what ultimately became an early 2025 Formula DRIFT championship decider, Round 7 in Utah delivered the craziest round of the year to date.

Already one of the fastest tracks on the FD calendar, a newly revised layout took the drama up a level, producing one of the most insane drift crashes we’ve ever seen.

As Matt Field went head-to-head with Dylan Hughes in the Final 4 one-more-time (OMT) run, Field was leading in his Corvette C6 when Hughes was pedalling his 2JZ-powered BMW E46 M3 to its limits when disaster struck.

As Hughes went door-to-door with Field, with the huge speed both drivers were carrying, a slight mistake made all the difference.

Before he knew it, Hughes’ BMW climbed Field’s front tire, and the E46 was launched onto the hood of the Corvette.

The BMW became airborne in what Hughes later described as a “hovercraft” moment. Yup – that’s Matt Field’s hood flying through the air, showing the force of the impact.

Both cars are forced off the track and into the gravel, with Hughes still mounted on top.

Here’s how they ended up, with Formula DRIFT joking, “You can’t park there,” based on popular social memes.

Thankfully, despite the BMW glued firmly onto what would’ve been his hood, Field emerges from the crash unscathed – another testament to the safety of the pro-spec drift cars these days.

Shortly after, Dylan Hughes also climbs out of his E46, and both drivers immediately give a thumbs-up to the cheering fans.

Unsurprisingly, Hughes was deemed at-fault, having failed to lift off the throttle after closing the gap too aggressively.

Hughes said in a post-crash interview: “I was looking at the sky and hoping I wasn’t on top of Matt.” It must have been a pretty crazy and scary situation to be in, knowing another car is likely wedged under yours.

Impressively, both cars only suffered minor damage despite the huge incident, and after being uncoupled, both drivers were able to return to the pits under their own power.

Not only that, but Field was able to get the Corvette out for the final battle against James Deane – well, what was left of the ‘Vette by that point, at least!

The crash set up what would become a championship-deciding final, with James Deane ultimately claiming his historic fifth title.

Meanwhile, the battle for second place in the overall standings remains wide open heading into the first-ever season finale at Long Beach on the new custom-built street layout.
