Summary
Mr. Drifter: Car Chase Simulator is a high-intensity, top-down arcade-style getaway game where the relentless cops have one goal in mind – blowing your car to smithereens, whatever it takes!
You’re a fugitive on the run in a deserted nighttime city with a goal of collecting as many loose gold coins as possible, while outsmarting the cops by pulling off your best drifting and driving skills to stay alive. The cops aren’t out to simply arrest you and put you behind bars. They’ll smash, crash, and ram into you at insane speeds until your car inevitably explodes in a giant fireball.
It looks easy at first glance, but as soon as the fast-paced adrenaline rush begins, you’ll quickly see how challenging it really is. The police cars seemingly appear out of nowhere, forcing you to suddenly think outside the box and be unpredictable, throwing down sharp 180-degree handbrake turns and massive drifts to try and fool them.
As you fight to escape, you’ll notice power-ups scattered around the city, all of which give you temporary advantages (speed boosts, shields, freeze effects, and massive cop explosions), but one wrong move and smoke and flames will begin pouring from your hood before you’re blown to bits.
The old-school Grand Theft Auto-style low-poly visuals zoom in once you unlock better cars, making it even more challenging to see when the cops are coming. There are 10 vehicles to unlock with your coin earnings, an achievement system (with bonuses), and a variety of player stats, allowing you to challenge your friends to beat your most impressive scores.

Physics
The fun, somewhat realistic arcade-style drifting physics offer predictable sliding, which is ideal for beginners. It’s kinda similar to the hugely popular Escape Road game, but the speed of Mr. Drifter makes it noticeably harder early-on, especially combined with the much cleverer AI that comes darting at you from every angle.
Each car handles slightly differently. The sports cars are grippier, while the faster cars have better getaway potential (the cop cars are surprisingly fast!) It’s worth trying as many as you can to see which suits your driving style best.
Graphics
The simple GTA 2-like visuals offer an aerial view of the action, along with cartoon superhero vibes (boom and plunk effects when crashing). If you’re after more impressive visuals, there are plenty of free browser games (such as UNBOUNDED) that are jaw-dropping.
You may notice that Mr. Drifter is reluctant to go full screen (we can’t fix it, unfortunately!). However, if you click the full-screen button in the bottom right of the game frame, you can zoom in on your browser by holding Ctrl and pressing the + key (or by holding Ctrl while scrolling up on your mouse wheel). Keep doing this until it fills your browser screen, and the graphics will auto-optimize.
Controls
PC/laptop/Chromebook
- W/Up arrow – Accelerate
- S/Down arrow – Brake/reverse
- A/Left arrow – Steer left
- D/Right arrow – Steer right
- Space – Handbrake/e-brake
You don’t need to press any buttons to activate the power-ups – they activate automatically.
Mobile/tablet (iOS/Android)
Mr. Drifter isn’t available on mobile devices, but if this is what you’re after, make sure you check out our ever-growing mobile games catalog for plenty of optimized alternatives.
How to play Mr. Drifter: Car Chase Simulator
Initial setup
The main menu shows your current car with these buttons:
- Garage – Browse your existing cars, and purchase new vehicles
- Achievements – Claim your bonus coin rewards
- Stats – View your personal records (great for challenging friends to beat your scores)
- Options – Adjust music/sound sliders and change language
- Coin balance – This is in the top-right of the screen, and you can see how much you need to unlock your favorite cars in the Garage
Before you start, visit the Achievements screen to see the quick money-earning opportunities on offer. For example, you’re given big-money payouts for simple goals like playing twice, destroying two enemy cars, collecting two coins, or spending coins in the garage.
All of these are awarded with 100+ coin bonuses. You’ll need to return to this menu later and click “Claim” next to completed achievements to add them to your balance.
Player Stats tracks everything you’ve done in the game. From total coins collected, to enemy cars destroyed, high score, coins spent, times died, games played, single-run max coins, total distance traveled, and max cars destroyed in one run.
Getting started
When you’re ready to start playing (be prepared – the chaos gets underway immediately), you can click the center of the screen.
You’ll find yourself driving down the road in the deserted nighttime city with gold coins scattered everywhere. Before you know it, the cops will be instantly on your tail, and they’re set out to destroy your car at any cost.
Your objective is to collect as many coins as possible, outsmart the cops with your best driving and drifting techniques, and pull off sharp handbrake turns (Space key) in an effort to evade capture. You’ll soon realize the stock car is slower than the police vehicles, so you’ll need to be even more unpredictable and strategic early on.
Soon, you’ll notice glowing Power-ups, which appear as illuminated boxes in blue or green light beams projected onto the ground. Don’t worry – none of these are bad. They all offer various benefits.
You’ll have ot drive through them to activate one of these randomized benefits (you can’t see what they are until you’ve gone through them).
- Fast – This speeds up the game, making you quicker than the cops, but your car becomes more erratic and harder to control
- Heal – Restores (some) car health by putting out flames and repairing minor damage, but it won’t make your flaming car perfect again
- Big Boom – This causes a MASSIVE atomic bomb-style explosion that’ll destroy all of the nearby cops without harming you
- Slow – This slows the game down significantly, making it much easier to predict the cop movements and swerve away from them
- Freeze – Freezes all cop cars temporarily
- Shield – Provides a glowing armor shield around your car, which leaves the cops blowing up if they try to hit you
- Grow – Makes your car huge, super durable, but also very heavy, which means you’ll temporarily have poor handling and a massive turning circle
- Shrink – Your car becomes tiny, making it super quick and nimble, and the cops will struggle to get you
Car damage progression: No smoke means your car is fine, but white smoke is where you’ve taken one hit too many, which soon turns to black smoke, before flames begin pouring out. At this point, your vehicle’s health is critical, and it’s one hit away from game over before exploding into pieces.
When you’re driving deep into the city, you’ll have more coins and power-ups available, but also more cops. Heading to the suburbs means fewer cops, but far fewer available coins. When you head to these rural areas, make sure you avoid driving into the mountains or falling into the ocean, as you can probably guess how that ends!
The good news is that once you’ve been blown up (it won’t take long!), you can simply click to restart and jump back into the action instantly.
Game modes
There’s only one game mode available: endless survival. There are no levels; it’s just you versus an increasingly aggressive police force as your wanted level climbs (max 5 stars). At 3 stars, things begin to get chaotic. Beyond that, it’s absolute carnage.
If you’re looking for more variety, Force Drift Racing: Aussie Burnout offers multiple modes, including exclusive Summernats-style burnout pits where you get to explode tires in front of screaming fans. Or, for something completely different that still delivers high-intensity action, Rocket Goal offers a Rocket League-style soccer experience in your browser, along with online multiplayer features.
If you’d rather stick with the getaway-style action, we’ve also got plenty more police games in our catalog, many of which offer totally unique approaches.
Car list
There are 10 low-poly cartoon-styled vehicles ranging from 700 to 1,600 coins:
- Stock red classic American car (free)
- Green Lamborghini Murciélago convertible sports car – 700
- Yellow Lambo Gallardo-style sports car – 800
- American muscle car with supercharger intake – 900
- Ford Mustang-style muscle car with go-faster stripes – 1,000
- Smaller green Miata-like car – 1,100
- Similar teal Miata-like car – 1,300
- Go-kart – 1,400
- Old-school American pickup truck – 1,500
- Porsche 911-inspired sports car – 900 (Bargain!)
Each car handles and drives differently. The sports cars are grippier and have more traction, making them a much better pick for outrunning the cops. You can quickly earn cars with achievement bonuses, so it’s worth unlocking as many as you can to see what suits your driving style best.
If you don’t fancy grinding it out and you’d rather have all the cars unlocked from the start, Madalin Stunt Cars 3 gives you over 34 vehicles to choose from immediately, along with online multiplayer so you can play with friends or in public lobbies, which is something this game doesn’t offer. If you like the sound of this aspect, but don’t fancy MSC3, you can also check out our selection of multiplayer games for more options.
For another low-poly game with a completely different goal, Polytrack challenges you to improve your best lap time in Time Attack-style racing on global leaderboards with super-realistic driving physics. It looks simple on the surface, but I can assure you that’s definitely not the case!
Tuning and upgrades
Unfortunately, there’s no tuning, upgrades, or customization whatsoever in Mr. Drifter. In-game progression comes from unlocking new cars and setting bigger records.
If you want a super in-depth and realistic simulator with real-life drifting physics that’ll massively improve your skills, look no further than Drift Hunters MAX. You won’t believe this game is available for free in your browser. It features nearly 40 cars, loads of tracks, a huge selection of tuning and upgrade options, Drift Attack mode (with clipping points), and AI traffic. For lower-spec devices that can’t run MAX, the classic Drift Hunters game is a perfect entry-level alternative.
The only downside of the Drift Hunters series is the lack of online multiplayer, which is where Drift King is the perfect realistic alternative, again bringing plenty of tuning and upgrade potential. Or, if you’re a die-hard Japanese car fan, Drift Hunters Pro (made by the same team as Drift King) offers a huge selection of JDM cars, along with similar physics and tuning.
Advanced tips & tricks
Stay in the urban areas for better earning potential
You’ll find far more coins and power-ups when you’re in the city. The outskirts are safer, with fewer cops, but offer little in the way of earnings. With that said, if you’re looking to improve your longest times on the leaderboard, this will be a winner.
Collect the power-ups whenever possible
Although you won’t know what you’ll get, these can be perfect for mixing things up when things get a bit chaotic. They all offer benefits, but it’ll fall to you to learn how to maximize their potential.
Don’t forget to use the handbrake
Using the Space key to pull off sudden 180-degree turns is a super-easy way to make yourself unpredictable. The cops will often struggle when you suddenly flip direction.
Watch out for smoke (or worse, flames) coming out of your car
As you’ll soon realize, white smoke = minor damage. Black smoke = serious trouble. Flames mean you’re just one hit away from game over. Try to grab the power-ups when you’re smoking, as these will often provide benefits and advantages.
Avoid driving in straight lines unless you’ve got a faster car
The cop cars are faster than the early purchases, so if you think you’ll outrun them in a straight line, you’re in for a harsh lesson.
Mr. Drifter: Car Chase Simulator FAQ
What’s the main objective in Mr. Drifter?
You need to survive as long as possible while collecting coins and evading the police. Unlock all 10 cars and set your highest scores, then challenge your friends to see if they can beat them.
What’s the quickest way to earn coins?
Alongside picking them up in-game, make sure you claim the achievement bonuses as soon as they’re available (100-200 coins each) by completing simple tasks like playing twice, destroying enemy cars, or collecting coins.
How many cars are there?
There’s a total of 10 cars, ranging from the stock starter car through to the most expensive car in the game, which is (surprisingly) an old-school American pick-up truck.
Can I play online?
There’s no multiplayer in this game, but the player stats section lets you create challenges and compete for high scores. For online play, we recommend Drift King or Survival Race.
Are there varied difficulty levels available?
The difficulty increases as your wanted level climbs from 1 to 5 stars. More stars means (FAR) more aggressive cops, and more of them!
