Following some huge surprises in July, the numbers are in for Steam’s top drifting games in August. Once again, there are plenty of shifts and spikes across the board.

The previous month was one of the most significant on the calendar for drifting games, inflating many of the numbers.

Steam’s Summer Sale was followed closely by Steam Racing Fest, which ran from July 28 to August 4. This also had an impact on this month’s numbers, with both sales offering huge discounts on select games.

The Reasons Behind August’s Biggest Shifts

Here are the notable changes, along with the likely reasons behind the biggest movements.

Steam Racing Fest Helped Need For Speed Sales

As we mentioned earlier, Steam Racing Fest offered up to 93% off some of the most popular drifting games, so remember that some of the changes look a little crazier than usual.

With the biggest discount, NFS: Unbound saw a whopping 80% increase. Unsurprisingly, this was on sale at 93% off (just $4.89/£4.19). Given that the future of the series is in doubt, which has provided plenty of publicity, it may be the last-ever game in the NFS franchise.

CarX Street also benefited from Racing Fest (with 55% off), combined with the latest 1.7.2 update, and the Xbox and PlayStation releases providing cross-platform perks.

Finally, Assetto Corsa EVO released its 0.3 update after more initial delays, providing a 46% increase in players. However, the average player count was still just 301 – certainly not the kind of numbers they would hope to see. The lack of updates during Early Access and silence on the “open world” features aren’t sitting well with fans.

Why These Aren’t All Purely Drift-Focused Games

Wreckreation is another game that’ll soon be joining the list.

We appreciate that not all of these are full-blown “drifting games.” However, they’re games that are typically played by fans of drifting, and given that they’re on PC, many of them have drifting mods available.

Take Grand Theft Auto V and BeamNG.drive, for example. Both continue adding drift content. Again, these aren’t typical drifting games, but it’s great to see they’ve both significantly improved their drifting support over time.

We’ve also included some rally-focused games for similar reasons, as they’re games we enjoy that have helped us improve our drifting skills over the years. If you’re looking for games that’ll improve you as an overall sim driver, these are awesome.

Similarly, while Tokyo Xtreme Racer‘s drifting capabilities remain almost non-existent, it has been one of the most popular games among drifting fans here at Drifted, given the close ties to the Japanese/JDM/retro scene.

Wreckfest and its recent sequel, Wreckfest 2, have also incorporated a growing number of drift cars over time. They also both feature drift-friendly physics and limited-slip differential settings for tail-happy action.

Some Games Are More Popular On Other Platforms

A perfect example is Forza Horizon 5, which was designed for consoles. It’s been hugely popular among Xbox players in recent years and has also experienced incredible sales figures after its recent (controversial) PlayStation release.

Assetto Corsa continues to upset its newborn sibling.

On the other hand, games like Assetto Corsa offer a far superior experience on PC, thanks to the modding community, which completely transforms the game. Given this, it has far more players on Steam than it does on consoles.

At the same time, games like BeamNG.drive aren’t available on consoles, which also helps boost their Steam popularity.

There are also alternative options for PC players beyond Steam, including Epic Games, EA Play, and GOG.

Given that we’re unable to source accurate monthly playing data for other platforms (such as consoles, Play Store, iOS, etc.), this is the most accurate data we have found that confirms the most popular content.
