When it seemed unlikely we’d see any more Tokyo Xtreme Racer updates arrive before the ‘Version 1.0’ release, expected in September, the team just rolled out another new update, ‘Ver.0.14.0’, bringing many more welcome improvements to the game.

Here’s a simplified explanation of the changes. If you want to see the in-depth explanations on each feature, you can check out the Steam changelog announcement.

PERK System Redesign

Driver, Skill, and Perk categories get a substantial overhaul, alongside significant BP changes.

The biggest change is a total restructuring of how you spend Battle Points (BP).

Driver abilities are now split into five core stats, which determine your driver level:

  • SP – Mental strength
  • ATK – Attack power
  • DEF – Defense
  • TGH – Collision durability
  • TEC – Skill slots

Skills are now merged into the Driver category and unlocked based on your ability levels – think of it like a skill tree where higher stats open up better abilities. You equip these skills in your garage before battles.

The new Perk category focuses on quality-of-life improvements. Want more CP from battles? There’s a multiplier perk. Tired of expensive parts? There’s a discount perk. These cost more BP but provide permanent benefits that make grinding less painful.

Important: Your save will reset all PERK data when you update, but the game calculates how much BP you should have based on rivals you’ve beaten and auto-unlocks everything you had before.

Smarter Rival AI

Rivals now have “their own unique personality”. Thanks to AI improvements, they’ll now be more imaginative and tougher than ever before.

Genki says that this is the most requested feature from the fans, and they’ve now provided each rival with a unique personality behind the wheel.

Some will actively block your racing line, while others might slow down to mess with you, and many now come equipped with skills that you can check in the Reference screen.

BP Earnings Changes

You’re no longer stuck with one-time BP rewards. First-time rival defeats still give +3 BP, but now you get +1 BP for beating the same rival again, as many times as you like.

Additional New Features/Fixes

  • The next rival can now appear ahead of you during consecutive battles
  • Low SP triggers an alarm warning
  • Tire life doubled to support longer skill usage
  • Other cars get improved drivers and better-tuned vehicles as you progress
  • Unfulfilled goals stay visible in a separate category on course entry
  • New English conversation font
  • Various collision fixes with other cars
  • Vinyl sticker application bugs resolved
  • B.A.D. NAME unlock condition fixes
  • Translation improvements across multiple languages
  • Achievement description updates
  • Turbo boost pressure calculation revised
  • Oil/water temperature wear reduction adjusted from 1/4 to 1/2
  • Adjusted expressions of some rivals
  • Fixed GRP logo appearing incorrectly on some manufacturers’ aero parts
  • Fixed LIVERY screen bug
  • Fixed minor cursor movement bug

We’ve been super impressed by Genki’s consistency throughout the Early Access period. Given the ‘Overwhelmingly Positive’ feedback from Steam fans, it seems we’re not alone, either.

Alongside the many fixes along the way, they’ve also recently unveiled new cars for the Version 1.0 release almost daily.

So far, the following new additions are confirmed:

Right now, we’re more hyped than ever for the final version, and given how eager they’ve been to keep the fans happy, we should be in for plenty more surprises!

Unfortunately, no surprises just yet for TXR Xbox and PlayStation fans, but we feel it’s more likely than ever that they’ll arrive after the full PC release.
