Summary

Scrap Car Merge isn’t your typical Drifted game. You don’t even get to drive the car (well, pickup truck), let alone slide it, and sweeping a turret on the roof from side to side is about the closest you’ll get to drift transitions. But don’t let that put you off, because this one is still a ton of fun and a perfect stress reliever after a hard day.

You’ll get to blast your way through relentless waves of zombies while upgrading your pickup truck and weapons to help you along the way.

You start with a bare-bones scrap truck (seemingly the last surviving vehicle) in a world taken over by the undead. You’ll go through a loop of short survival runs through zombie-packed levels, earning coins, buying weaponry, and merging them into upgraded versions.

The “car” transforms as you go, from a basic offroader with a simple gun on top into a fully armored survival machine with rocket support and a zombie plow welded to the front.

It’s way harder than it looks since the merge system ties your upgrade tiers to the level you’re on, your inventory is tight, and the parts you buy are completely random, so it ends up being luck of the draw as to whether you’ll get the parts you need. But, finally breaking free by reaching freedom at the end of a level you’ve been stuck on for ages feels ridiculously good.

Physics

Screenshot – SPLAT! You’ll undoubtedly enjoy firing at the zombies, leaving piles of them behind you as you progress.

There’s not really much to speak of besides aiming and shooting, but they feel predictable and satisfying when the zombies splatter following a perfect hit.

The truck drives itself on a fixed path, and you have zero control over steering, speed, or braking. You just need to manage your weaponry and try your best to make it to safety at the end of the level.

If you want to be more in control, the same team also created Downhill Car Ride: Crash Test, where you get to throw a selection of vehicles off giant ramps while causing as much damage and destruction as possible.

Alternatively, for vehicular combat that combines actual drifting, Drift.io offers a free-for-all deathmatch mode where you’re chaining e-brake slides between firefights and scavenging rocket pickups.

Graphics

The visuals are low-poly and simple, with chunky zombies and a muted color palette that suits the post-apocalyptic desert setting.

Scrap Car Merge - Image 16
Screenshot – Things get brighter and quirkier with each new upgrade.

Your truck’s mods are the visual highlight, transforming noticeably as you bolt on the upgrades. It gets a lick of paint as you start adding the roll cage, which gives way to plated armor panels. Along with upgraded wheels and tires and colorful weaponry, the whole vehicle looks totally different by the later levels.

Scrap Car Merge - Image 17
Screenshot – When the black smoke appears, you’ll know your truck is on its last legs, and it’s time to use your weapons more carefully than ever.

Smoke (and eventually flames) pour out of the pickup when damage is serious, providing a clear visual warning when your health is running low. If you’re out of ammo, you’ll not be able to survive much longer. Deadly Descent is on another level when it comes to realistic damage visuals, though, where you have body panels flying off and wheels detaching mid-run while you attempt to make it to the finish line without your chassis getting stuck in the ground.

Controls

PC/laptop/Chromebook

  • Mouse movement – Aim turret left/right
  • Left mouse button (click/hold) – Fire turret
  • X – Launch rocket support

Mobile/tablet (iOS/Android)

It’s well-optimized for mobiles, and there are loads more mobile games at Drifted if you’re after quick-session picks on the go.

How to Play Scrap Car Merge

Initial Setup

Before you even get to look at the in-game options, you’re pointed (literally) toward the ‘Add Part’ button straight away. You start with 10 coins, enough to buy your first part, and the game walks you through dragging and dropping it onto the vehicle.

Scrap Car Merge - Image 18
Screenshot – The early levels start (relatively) calmly, but the madness soon cranks up several notches.

Once the turret is mounted, you’ll head out for your opening run almost immediately, so don’t expect much time to explore the menus (not that there’s a lot to explore yet).

You’ll see the five upgrade options available: turret, wheels, rockets, ammo, and armor, along with six inventory spots for your new part purchases. Early payouts are generous, so you’ll have those slots filling up quicker than you’d think.

Getting Started

Zombies rush in from the sides the moment each level starts. Aim the crosshair and fire to take them down before they get a chance to reach your vehicle. A single zombie touching your ride means game over (no pressure), so your aim matters from the very first run.

Screenshot – When you (finally) complete a level, you’ll be given a sneak peek at what you’ll be able to unlock next.

Even short runs pay out a generous amount of coins initially, and the early rewards are enough to buy several parts at once. The ‘merge’ loop kicks in here. Buy parts, drag matching ones together to create a higher-level version, then mount the upgrade(s) on the truck.

You’ll notice the difference almost immediately as upgraded weapons chew through zombies much faster and help you progress further through each level. The closest comparison we can think of for the overall feel is Road of Fury 4, which runs the same auto-driving vehicle combat with aiming, upgrades, and enemy waves that keep ramping up.

Game Modes

Scrap Car Merge - Image 20
Screenshot – Freedom! Sometimes it feels like you’ll never actually reach the safe haven at the finish line military barracks, and you can breathe a sigh of relief when you finally get there.

There’s just one game mode, with ever-increasing difficulty. Each level is a zombie-filled gauntlet with a safe finish area, and the only way to keep getting closer is by upgrading between runs. Even with perfect aim and ammo preservation, you’ll struggle to make it to the finish with the standard weapons.

If the single-mode setup has you wanting something with more variety, Smash Karts provides rockets, mines, and grenades in packed online lobbies across 22 maps with FFA, team battles, and capture the flag game modes on offer. We also have an ever-increasing variety of action games in a similar vein. Or, if battling real players (whether it’s weapons or drift battles) is more your thing, our multiplayer games page is also worth a look.

Upgrades & Merge System

This is where the game’s concept comes alive. Every run earns you coins, and coins buy parts, but you don’t get to choose what you’re buying. It’s more like a lucky dip when you hit the ‘Add Part’ button, where you might be desperate for armor but the game hands you (yet) another set of rockets you’ve already maxed out.

The loop of failed runs, earning cash, and slowly turning a weak vehicle into something that bulldozes through zombies is almost identical to the classic Earn to Die 2012 Part 2, but with the “merge” format added in for good measure.

Your inventory has six slots, and parts come in five categories.

  • Turret – Your main weapon, mounted on the roof and aimed with the mouse. Higher levels deal more damage per shot.
  • Wheels/tires – Boost your vehicle’s speed on the road and ability to blast through zombies.
  • Rockets – Sit in the back of the truck and fire a cluster barrage ahead of you when you press X. Keep an eye on the button at the bottom to see how long you’ve got until the next recharge.
  • Ammo – Increases how much you can fire before running dry. Later levels burn through bullets fast, so this soon matters more than you might think.
  • Armor – Starts as a basic roll cage, then evolves into plated armor with a zombie plow at the front. Without upgrades, one zombie ends the run. With them, you can take a few hits and even plow through smaller groups, but don’t count on ramming your way through everything unless you’re right near the finish.
Scrap Car Merge - Image 21
Screenshot – When you’ve got two matching parts in your inventory (ammo and wheels), you can drag and drop one onto the other. to double-up its potential.

Merging is where you’ll start to really see some progress. Drag two matching parts of the same level together to create a single higher-level weapon. As you progress, the requirements get even higher.

Scrap Car Merge - Image 22
Screenshot – Once dropped, the ammo goes up to 170 rather than 120.

For example, a level three part needs two level ones merged into a level two, that repeated, then the two level twos merged together, eating up four inventory slots for a single upgrade.

Scrap Car Merge - Image 23
Screenshot – With the two ammo boxes (paired to get to 170) combined, you can then replace your existing ammo next to your truck by again dragging and dropping. This will then show that you’ll reach the ‘MAX’ upgrade tier for this level.

The merge tier cap matches your current level, so on level two, parts max out at level two, three for three, etc. You can’t stockpile high-level parts early, and you need to grind, merge, and manage your six slots every step of the way. Admittedly, it all probably sounds a little confusing, but you’ll soon see for yourself.

You can also upgrade your income earnings between runs, which bumps up the coins you get for each run. Like everything else, it gets more expensive the further you go (and watching an ad after a failed run can boost your payout if you’re keen to progress).

Advanced Tips & Tricks

Try not to spray and pray (unless you need to)

Scrap Car Merge - Image 24
Screenshot – Sometimes you’ll have no choice, but it’s best to keep some ammo in reserve, especially if you’re not yet at MAX for that level.

It’s tempting to hold the fire button and sweep the turret across everything constantly, but you’ll burn through ammo before you’re halfway through the level. Short, aimed bursts at individual zombies are way more efficient, especially once enemies start coming from every angle. Sometimes you’ll have no choice but to spray and pray, so save the sustained fire for when a big group clusters together.

Time Shooter 2 is the most popular shooting game at Drifted, taking the same careful-aim philosophy even further if you enjoy it, where time moves when you move, and every single shot counts as you avoid slow-motion bullets. We also recently added the newest addition to the series, Time Shooter 3: SWAT, which is a must-try for any fan.

Think ahead when it comes to making the most of the rockets

Scrap Car Merge - Image 25
Screenshot – D’oh…. If you fire the rockets too early, they’ll just hit what you probably could’ve gotten through with ammo rather than reaching the terrifying tentacles that you’ll soon be confronted by.

The X key fires a massive cluster of rockets ahead of you, and it’s the most powerful tool in your arsenal (assuming you use it correctly). In the later levels, fire too early, and the rockets land on the zombies in front that you could’ve just shot, while the massive spiked tentacles further ahead stay untouched. Fire too late, and the tentacles will have already smashed into your truck while you’re waiting for the rockets to replenish.

Scrap Car Merge - Image 26
Screenshot – Perfect timing – this is roughly when you want to launch the rockets. This means they have time to go up into the sky, and come crashing down, severely damaging the tentacles in time for your arrival.

Watch the road ahead and save rockets for the tentacles whenever you can, since they’re way harder to destroy with the turret alone. Age of War is a popular old-school game with a similar last-resort special attack that can bail you out of a bad wave, paired with the same earn-upgrade-survive style of this one.

Use your inventory slots wisely

The six slots fill up fast when you need four parts just to build one level three upgrade. If your inventory is full and you buy a new part, it just disappears (your coins are wasted – you’ve been warned!).

If you hold a part and begin dragging, a trash can appears. This lets you bin duplicates of parts you’ve already maxed for the level (even when it feels wasteful), which can help to keep at least one slot open.

Think about whether you can merge before you mount

Dropping a low-level part straight onto the truck is always tempting, especially early on. But merging two matching parts first gives you a stronger version that makes a noticeable difference. Unless you’re about to start a run and you’ve got an empty upgrade slot, hold off and merge for a superior version.

Flames mean it’s now or never

Scrap Car Merge - Image 27
Screenshot – Sometimes, even with a well-timed rocket, you simply won’t make it through if you’re totally out of ammo and running low of armor, as these things deliver a serious blow to your ride.

When your truck catches fire, you’re a couple of zombie (or tentacle) hits from game over. At this point (unless your armor can get you through), your only hope is that your rocket support has recharged. A well-timed strike can clear the road ahead and let you scrape through to the finish, even when it looks completely hopeless.

Fans of Escape Road 3 will know the “one more hit and it’s game over” feeling as flames pour out of your ride, also offering a similar quick-session energy with weapons, unlocks, and escalating police chases across an open world.

Scrap Car Merge FAQ

Can I play Scrap Car Merge on mobile?

Yep. It plays well on any portable touchscreen with on-screen controls and runs in your mobile browser without needing to download anything.

What are the controls for Scrap Car Merge?

Mouse movement to aim the turret, left click to fire, and X to launch rocket support. On mobile, it’s on-screen touch controls and release to save your ammo.

How do I upgrade my car?

Buy parts with coins, merge matching parts to level them up, then drag the upgraded part onto your vehicle. Each of the five part types has its own slot.

What happens when I run out of ammo?

You can’t fire the turret until your next run. If your rockets are charged, press X to clear the road ahead. Otherwise, you just have to hope the armor holds out.

Can I choose which parts I buy?

Nope. Each purchase is random, so you might end up with duplicates of parts you’ve already maxed (unfortunately). You can bin the ones you don’t need to free up inventory space.

Is there multiplayer in Scrap Car Merge?

No. It’s solo only, but we’ve got plenty of other picks in our multiplayer games category.
