Rapid Rally

Summary
In Rapid Rally, you’ll steer a variety of cartoony rally-style modded vehicles through a range of short, top-down timed stages, where steering is all you need to think about (well, sort of!).

The vehicles (from sports cars to tanks) accelerate automatically, and there’s no brake or handbrake, which makes things harder than you might think.
Each vehicle has bouncy handling that takes its sweet time transitioning from one direction to the other, so even simple corners need setting up early. By the later stages, you’ll need to countersteer and swing your ride from side to side and run the walls like a proper drifter if you want a chance of completing the level.
Earning just one star unlocks the next stage, so progress comes nice and easily (at first, anyway). The bigger test is chasing three-star times and the optional sticker challenges, where you’ll need to beat the AI computer ghost that drives each course to near-perfection.

Soon, the stages get crammed with tiny (often moving) gaps and plenty of solid obstacles and narrow bridges get ridiculously tough (and often frustrating!).
Although the nine vehicles on offer look totally different, they’re purely cosmetic, so there’s nothing that’s gonna make things easier beyond sharpening up your skills. But, since it only takes a few seconds to complete the levels (assuming it goes to plan), it’s a great game when you fancy a quick challenge to improve your skills rather than an in-depth grinder.

Physics

The physics are bouncy and super fun, with loads of body roll as the car sways and slides through every corner. Sure, it’s not the most realistic browser game, but it’s not trying to be.
The catch is that these aren’t snappy rally cars that’ll instantly flick to opposite lock, (especially with the lack of brake/e-brake), so a 90-degree corner needs planning well in advance.

As you progress through the levels (each one only lasts a matter of seconds) you’ll soon start drifting wall-to-wall with manjis. Although it’s classed as a rally game, your drifting skills will come in very handy. Feeling a little rusty? Our how to drift guide helps to understand everything you need to know about weight shifting and running walls. Since you’ve got barriers lining most of the tracks, you’ll soon be able to pretend you’re Naoki Nakamura in a Meihan-style challenge!
If the sliding ends up being your favorite part, Drift Arena provides the same top-down view, automatic acceleration and missing brake, but focuses on drift combos instead of times, while adding online ghost battles against other players. It’s one of many drifting games we’ve got on offer, where there’s something for everyone.
Graphics

While it starts off fairly normal for a rally game, with a variety of surfaces to slide over. It all changes when giant pencils, erasers, rulers and books take over in Tier II, where you’ll need to weave your tiny car between massively oversized stationery that doubles as scenery and obstacles.
It gives off proper Micro Machines vibes, (although most of you probably aren’t old enough to remember it!). Wacky Wheels has a similar old-school flavor thanks to its similar star-collection, along with moving hazards and slightly bouncy handling on increasingly awkward layouts.
You’ll soon realize that elevation and angles on the ramps are the hardest thing to judge in this game, since they don’t have obvious shading at times. You can think you’re heading along dead flat and suddenly find yourself climbing a ramp straight toward a tire pile.
There’s a few quirks where trees and scenery occasionally appear through the track, which can be a little distracting. Especially when you’re already trying to deal with so much fast-paced action.
Controls
PC/laptop/Chromebook
- A/Left arrow – Steer left
- D/Right arrow – Steer right
- R – Restart level
Mobile (iOS/Android)
Surprisingly, Rapid Rally isn’t available on phones or tablets right now, even though it feels perfect for a mobile port. The good news is that our other mobile games have plenty to play on the go.
Rally Racer Dirt is a popular pick with rally fans on their phone. It’s a much fuller (and realistic) rally game, and the mobile version accelerates automatically by default, too, while adding the braking, handbrake and nitrous Rapid Rally leaves out.
How to Play Rapid Rally
Initial Setup
The main menu keeps things simple with “Play Rally”, “Achievements” and “Settings”. Settings only covers Music and Effects volume, so there’s nothing to tweak before you drive. Achievements you’ll work toward are worth a peek (even if it’s for the amusing spelling alone). You’ll see goals like the star-collecting ones, which read “5X COLECTSTARS”.
Inside “Play Rally”, the Garage sits above the level list. You’ve got four rides to choose from right away. Since they’re only cosmetic, go with whichever one you like the look of.

Only the “Welcome” stage is unlocked at the start. It introduces the star system where you’ll need to finish in under 7.90 seconds for three stars, under 9.57 for two, or under 11.20 for one.
Getting Started
One star is enough to unlock the next stage, so you can keep moving and come back to try and secure three stars whenever you like. When you replay a stage, your own ghost runs alongside you, showing exactly where you gained or lost time and what to tidy up to make up time for the three-star rating.
Level 1 starts you off weaving around tire piles, working out how close you can get without clipping them. The early piles only slow you down a bit, but later obstacles are solid enough to practically stop you dead, so you can’t just smash your way through them and settle for a slower time.

Stages soon get a little longer, with tiny gaps you don’t always see coming, then moving gaps where walls slide from side to side and eventually colored buttons that open matching colored walls.

Along the way, you’ll fly over massive jumps, bridges, and loop-the-loops, which feel more like the chaos you’ll find in our stunts and crash games, even though wrecking things (definitely) isn’t the goal here.
Things start out super easy, but soon get properly hard, and the later stages regularly take more than one attempt (or twenty). Given this, it’s often a good idea to keep a finger hovering over “R” and restart the moment a run goes wrong.
Game Modes
There’s just one mode, the “Play Rally” career, which is split across two tiers. Tier I holds Welcome plus levels 1 to 30, with 93 stars and 31 stickers to collect, and Tier II adds 10 more levels once you’ve earned 10 stars, which doesn’t take long.

Most stages are point-to-point races against the clock (kinda like a real-world rally stage). You’ll also get random challenges thrown in, like arenas where you collect yellow B letters against the clock, from five on an early one to 40 later. You don’t need to hit each B dead center, but you do need to get pretty close, so the challenge is finding the quickest route between them. Of course, you’ll soon need to slide your way across massive oil spills for added challenge, too!
The arenas are like a slightly-more-forgiving Polytrack, which also requires endless route refinement and near-constant instant restarts. However, it swaps the sliding for clean grip-based precision racing, while adding a substantial track editor and online leaderboards.

If you earn three-stars on a stage, you’ll get a message that pops up saying “WANT EXTRA CHALLENGE? BEAT OUR BEST TIME AND EARN A STICKER!” Accept this, and you race the computer’s ghost for a winged gold B sticker, which helps purchase the craziest-looking vehicle in the garage. (Note that this has nothing to do with the yellow B letters).
Be warned that the ghost in the challenges basically drives to absolute perfection, and with early stages lasting only a few seconds, every millisecond matters. There’s no nitro button or magic trick for beating the computer. You’ve just got to get everything dialed, and it has to happen during the challenge itself, because you can’t use your previous time and earn the sticker. Completion of the sticker challenges are optional, which you’ll often be grateful for!
The positive here is that racing the ghost is almost like having an expert teacher, and copying its line can polish up your skills.

If you enjoyed the cartoon graphics and slide-y physics, Slippery Drift Racing is a drift-focus game with a Time Attack mode, the same ghost-chasing, and optional personal-best or developer ghosts. You also get a much-needed e-brake and proper AI races.
For the ultimate fast-paced, high-intensity browser-based rally experience, Rally Point 4 still rewards learning the route and sliding cleanly, but adds dedicated drift and nitro controls. There’s also engine heat to manage (and your car explodes to smithereens if you ignore it!).
Vehicle List

Unlike a lot of games where we’re unsure whether the vehicles are true upgrades, this one admits they’re “cosmetic changes only”. This means that none of the nine vehicles on offer are superior to others, so your skills are the only thing you can upgrade!
You get a choice of four vehicles from the start. They’re all cartoon-y, stylized replicas of recognizable real-world vehicles. You’ve got the likes of a Mini-style rally car, a VW Bug, a sports car and a Jeep-style off-roader. They’re all kitted out with rally mods like jacked-up suspension, spare wheels and tires, roof racks and… a surfboard (as you do!).
The other five are locked at the start, and the unlock ordering is a bit random, with four of them needing 30, 10, 50 and 20 stars (in that order), so it’s worth looking at the ones you fancy. You might get to unlock them quicker than you think.
The unlockable options include trucks, a VW campervan, and finally a crazy, properly rally-prepped machine with a huge supercharger sticking out of the hood (which you unfortunately need 10 stickers to unlock).
Fancy a little more to work towards? Hill Sprint, made by the same team, gives you the progression that the garage lacks here, with 43 vehicles and performance upgrades across 16 tracks.
Advanced Tips & Tricks
Keep a finger on R and restart the moment a run goes wrong

With so little room for error, a tiny mistake often makes it pointless to continue the run. There’s no prizes for limping to the finish once that happens.
If you keep your finger hovering over “R”, you can hit it as soon as you know a run’s gone (it’ll happen more than you’d like), and the saved seconds soon add up.
If you fancy a different challenge, Loop Crash 2 offers the same crash-and-retry vibe. Unlike this one, you only control the speed as you time your way through increasingly chaotic crossings.
Consider whether it’s worth taking on the sticker challenges
You’ll get offered this after a three-star finish. If you truly nailed the stage with confidence, or think there’s still time left to better your run, go for it.
If you barely scraped through, got lucky, or don’t really know how you managed it, remember you’ll have to do it again and go even quicker, so it’s often better to wait for a stage you’re more confident on. You can give a challenge a couple of attempts, but don’t get obsessed with beating every ghost. It’s more fun to work through all the levels.
Attack the bridges and loops at the correct angle

Bridges and other shortcuts can save time, but the vehicles are so slidey that you need to arrive at the perfect angle or you’ll likely fall off the ramp. Or worse, into the abyss.
Where big dips have bridges going across them, drifting onto the bridge keeps you on the faster route. Miss it and you can sometimes drive through the dip instead, which costs time.
Loop-the-loops need the same attention (and you can’t avoid them, either), since the angle you hit them at decides whether you come out cleanly or smash straight into the wall.
Rapid Rally FAQ
What’s the fastest car in Rapid Rally?
All of them. The Garage doesn’t hide the fact that each one has “cosmetic changes only”, so all nine vehicles handle and drive the same and just look different.
Do I need stickers to progress in Rapid Rally?
No, stickers are optional, but you’ll need 10 of them to unlock the “final boss” vehicle. One star is all it takes to unlock the next stage.
How do I use the brake or handbrake?
You’ve not got either of them to help you here! The cars accelerate automatically and you’ll “only” need to think about the steering.
Can I play Rapid Rally on my phone?
No. It isn’t available on phones or tablets right now, so you’ll need to use a PC, laptop or Chromebook.
