Summary

This isn’t your typical Formula racer. Time it right, and you’ll get to smash into rivals, sending them into a spin before they explode into a ball of flames (and it doesn’t even slow you down). Between the racing and boost focus, your car is satisfyingly tail-happy, too, and a quick brake tap is all it takes to kick the rear out.

Screenshot – Who said sideways isn’t the fastest way through a corner?!

If you’re hoping to smash your way through all 10 tracks in one sitting, you’re probably gonna be mistaken (unless I’m just terrible at it, which is possible). Every race is a single lap race where you’re at the back of the grid, and your stock car is slower than everyone else’s. The worst part? You’ll need to clinch the victory to unlock the next track, or it’s back to the start line for another try.

If that’s not already tough enough, the other drivers love ramming into you just when you think you’re clear, too. Thankfully, no matter where you finish, you get payouts to put towards useful upgrades. But, after the first track, you’ll probably need to grind a little before you can land the victory.

If you manage to conquer the world tour in this one, we’ve got plenty more grids to fight your way through in our racing games section.

Physics

Formula Racers - Image 14
Screenshot – Tapping brake mid-corner is perfect for when you’re about to hit your opponent, and need to change angle slightly.

Your car feels super grippy when you go into the corner, and then you’ll feel it start to slide if you’ve gone in a little too hot. You can encourage the back end to step out (along with a small puff of tire smoke), and the tiniest tap of the brake mid-corner really kicks it out. Big drift angles are a blast, but they’re not super helpful if your goal is to win.

If you find that the drifting action ends up being your favorite part, Arcade Car Drift offers a similar top-down, but drift-focused experience. You’ll go door-to-door with AI drifters and build proper drift trains while bashing doors, where you’ll need to think about drift points rather than position. Our other drifting games offer a huge variety of alternatives if that doesn’t tickle your fancy.

Screenshot – Make sure you do your best to hit these boost strips, as they’ll totally transform your chances of winning.

If you hit a boost strip on the track, the handling changes completely, and the sideways aspect goes out the window. The car suddenly feels like it’s on rails, and you can’t get the back end out even if you try, so you barely need to worry about braking.

Formula Racers - Image 16
Screenshot – Yeah, maybe that was a little too close, huh? Just one big crash is often enough to stop you being able to secure the victory. It’s surprisingly unforgiving.

Contact has its quirks, too. Without a boost, hitting someone from behind slows you down badly, catching them more from the side doesn’t hurt as much. On the other hand, smashing into them with the booster is where the fun lies!

Graphics

The bird’s-eye camera provides a Micro Machines kinda feel. The tracks are lined with grandstands and trees, with grass on some circuits, and gravel and sand along with a variety of scenery on others.

Formula Racers - Image 17
Screenshot – Blasting past the opponents mid-corner, with the seemingly-endless booster tire grip.

It all looks clean, polished, and modern enough, despite being pretty basic. If you make a mistake or pull off an impressive move, amusing emojis appear to tell you how you’re doing.

The downside of the top-down view is that it’s quite hard to see what’s coming up, especially given the insane speeds the cars reach, so the rival drivers and boost strips often catch you by surprise.

Controls

Acceleration is automatic, so steering and braking are all you need to think about.

PC/laptop/Chromebook

  • Left arrow – Steer left
  • Right arrow – Steer right
  • Down arrow – Brake/initiate drift

Mobile (iOS/Android)

  • Tap left side of screen – Steer left
  • Tap right side of screen – Steer right
  • Tap R icon in middle of screen – Brake/initiate drift

It plays smoothly on phones, but the brake is a small “R” icon in the middle of the screen, which is a bit awkward to use. If it bugs you, we’ve got plenty more touch-friendly racers in our mobile games section that are a little more optimized.

How to Play Formula Racers

Initial Setup

Formula Racers - Image 18
Screenshot – Your car starts off stock (but with reasonable specs), and you’ve got several upgrade choices (covered in more detail below) once you’ve earned some cash.

When you load the game, you’ll be straight in the garage with your blue Bluestone team car. Your bank balance sits in the top right and starts at zero, so there’s nothing to buy just yet.

Unlike most browser games, there’s no settings menu to fiddle with, so you can hit the red play button at the bottom to get straight into the action.

Getting Started

Your first race is in the USA, with a short tutorial showing you the controls and telling you when to brake for corners.

Formula Racers - Image 19
Screenshot – Sometimes, you might need to be sensible and avoid the boosters if it’ll likely result in a crash.

You start at the back of the grid, and you need to finish in first to earn the three stars required to unlock the next track. It’s a little harsh, but thankfully, even a podium pays decent money, with 2,500 coins for first, 2,000 for second, and 1,500 for third.

Before upgrades, your car is noticeably slower than the rest of the field, so you’ll need to make your time up in the corners. USA is fairly easy to win with the stock car once you get the hang of it, but after that it (genuinely) gets a lot harder very quickly.

The results screen doesn’t show your total balance, so you’ll need to head back to the garage to see if you can afford the next upgrade(s).

Fancy racing fast cars without grinding for them first? Speed Racing Pro 2 hands you the keys to all 12 of the supercars on offer from the start, then lets you mix things up with Race, Elimination, and Time Attack modes.

Game Modes

The single-player “career” is the only mode on offer, with one-lap races against AI across 10 tracks.

Formula Racers - Image 20
Screenshot – Rear-ending the other cars is rarely gonna end well. Unless you have boost, in which case it’s a totally different story!

Since every race is so short, you’ll often need to have a fair few goes at mastering each track before you can snatch the coveted first place.

You’ll get to go on a world tour, visiting:

  • USA
  • Bahrain
  • Australia
  • Italy
  • Germany
  • France
  • Brazil
  • Morocco
  • Argentina
  • Portugal

All of them are locked at the start, besides the USA, and you’ll need to work your way through them one at a time.

Loving the Formula battles but wish there was more to the game? Check out Crazy Grand Prix, which gives you a full 20-event along with Career, Practice sessions, and online lobbies to race against other players. The more simulation-like, grippier handling is all about nailing the braking points, apexes, and slipstream battles, and the AI is just as aggressive as this one!

Got a friend with you that you wanna go up against? Grand Extreme Racing provides local two-player PvP split-screen across its 10 circuits, along with Championship, Challenge, and Practice modes.

Car & Upgrades

There’s only one car, but plenty of upgrades. The six garage icons let you improve the following:

  • Brakes
  • Wings (aero)
  • Steering (handling/suspension)
  • Engine
  • Gearbox
  • Livery (team)

“Wings” points at the front splitter, so it provides an all-around improvement to performance rather than looks.

Every initial upgrade costs 2,500 coins, but after that the prices climb steeply and vary from part to part.

Formula Racers - Image 21
Screenshot – After a while, you’ll need to start earning big bucks to afford the next upgrade (or head back to USA – thank me later!).

Taking the engine from level one to two raises your top speed from 272 to 278 mph, and level two to three gets you to 283 mph for 3,570. The gearbox’s level two to three costs 4,235, and by engine level four to five, you’re paying nearly 7,500 to hit 294 mph.

If you’re struggling in the corners, I’d consider upgrading the brakes and steering rather than the speed. This is often where you’ll make up the most time, so it’s likely to be worth it.

If you want more speed, consider the engine, gearbox, and aero. Just bear in mind that the car gets slidier as it gets more powerful, so dumping everything into outright speed can leave you fighting it through the bends. The best way is to work out where you’re losing time, and put your money into that.

Formula Racers - Image 22
Screenshot – I certainly wouldn’t recommend splashing out 17k on a livery before you’ve upgraded the essentials.

You’ve also got 17 liveries to choose from, each a different team (Ferrara, anyone?) and sponsor setup. These are priced from 2,500 all the way up to 17,000 coins. They’re probably not the wisest investment early on, so I’d skip this until you’re consistently bagging wins.

Like the world-tour feel but not feeling the coin grind? Super Star Car lets you visit 14 tracks with a more-structured career ladder that gets tougher as you go. There’s no upgrades or boosters, so every win comes down to clean driving and squeezing everything out of the car you’re given (and the rival drivers are just as reckless).

Fancy swapping four wheels for two? GP Moto Racing 3 delivers a near-identical concept, but with superbikes. It’s more forgiving, too, since a top-three finish is all you need to progress.

Advanced Tips & Tricks

Hit the booster and take out the pack

Formula Racers - Image 23
Screenshot – The drifting is fun, but sending the other cars into a spin (which ends in a massive explosion) is undoubtedly the most satisfying part of Formula Racers!

When you’ve activated boost mode, you can take the opportunity to whack the other players off. It’s super fun, and it costs you nothing. There’s nothing more satisfying than coming up to the finish, hitting the booster, blasting past the other drivers (or leaving them spinning out into a fireball), and nicking the win at the last second.

Be careful if one of your rivals is currently on top of the boost strip, as you’ll just hit them from behind, which has the opposite effect!

Memorize where the boost strips are

Formula Racers - Image 24
Screenshot – Sending the “Ferrara” spinning out on the grass.

If you need to retry a track several times, the boosters remain in the same place, so learning where they are soon pays off. You’ll typically find them on the end of corners so be prepared. Look as far ahead as you can, keep an eye on the corner arrows (they’re genuinely useful), and get ready to hit each strip before it even appears.

Hooked on perfecting lap times? Polytrack is the ultimate browser-based time attack challenge. The simple graphics might not be too impressive, but you’ll soon realize it’s all about the super grippy handling, ghosts to chase, and instant retries. There’s also a track editor, leaderboards, and community-made courses so you’re never stuck with the same layouts.

Tap the brake before the corner and save mid-corner taps for emergencies

Formula Racers - Image 25
Screenshot – When you’re heading onto the grass, or the gravel, a quick tap is all that’s needed to get you back on track (excuse the pun!).

If you actually want to win, huge drift angles aren’t the fastest way around (boring, I know!). Instead, you want to focus on getting a clean racing line, no unnecessary collisions (often easier said than done), and maintaining as much speed as possible.

The more sensible approach is to give the brake a quick tap before the corner, and then steer in. Tap it mid-corner and you’ll kick the back end out, which we’re certainly never gonna say is a bad thing, but it doesn’t really help when you’re trying to win.

It can also be super useful when you’re mid-corner and inevitably about to smash into someone. A quick tap lets you change direction super quickly. You’ll soon need it, as the other drivers are ridiculously unpredictable, and just when you think you’re cleanly past, one of them will often smack into you for no reason.

Enjoy nailing the racing line more than grinding for coins? Formula Online puts you on Monza at over 350 km/h with a setup panel to play with, and challenges you to chase down Juan Pablo Montoya’s circuit record.

Head back to the USA if you need cash

If you get stuck on a later track, there’s no shame in going back to the first one for an easy payday.

You’ll have to deal with the obvious controls tutorial again, but it’s much easier to win. For an even better top-up, you can watch an ad at the end to double your earnings.

Formula Racers FAQ

How do you unlock new tracks in Formula Racers?

You have to win. First place earns the three stars you’ll need to open the next circuit, though second and third still hand you decent payouts for upgrades.

Can I play Formula Racers on my phone?

Yes, and it plays well, although the brake button in the middle of the screen isn’t ideal.

What upgrades should I do first?

I’d advise adding a bit more power, and seeing how you go. From there, you’ll want to see if you’re struggling in the corners. If so, it’s time to improve the brakes and steering (handling).
