Summary

You’d think a getaway car that accelerates and chooses its own route would make bank robbing a bit easier. Unfortunately, you’re responsible for yanking the handbrake to perfection at every intersection, often with milliseconds to juggle avoiding buildings on either side, an oncoming truck, and the drifting police car that’s hot on your tail.

It’s a one-click drifter, but you’ll soon realize that the tight streets and ever-increasing traffic stop it from becoming a simple timing exercise. Four-lane roads often send you sliding across cars (and speeding bikes) traveling in both directions, narrow alleys that barely leave any margin for error, and the occasional semi-trailer invites you to recreate the scene from The Fast and the Furious by driving (and drifting) underneath it.

Thankfully, the police are just as likely to hit the traffic as you are, and a little encouragement often has a rather satisfying outcome!

The longer you survive, the more the momentum builds. The streets (seemingly) get even narrower, bikes start appearing out of nowhere, cash bundles multiply, and New York soon transforms into rush hour, with the entire NYPD on hand.

Once the cash starts coming in, there’s a garage full of tongue-in-cheek cars to spend it on, from “Lightning McKing” to a hearse, and each new ride bumps your earnings so the next unlock comes a little quicker.

Physics

The handling is pure one-button arcade. Click to commit to the next corner and the car yanks the handbrake into a 90-degree drift. The direction is predetermined by the junction, so the only things you’re managing are timing and traffic.

Turning early is likely to leave you smashing into the building on the inside, while waiting too long might send you across the street into whatever is waiting opposite. A second click of the button can sometimes steer the car to safety, but other times it’ll leave you heading for the wall even faster.

Although the 21 vehicles handle kinda similarly, there are some subtle differences, since their speed, size, and rotation make each one unique. Smaller cars are more nimble and snappy thanks to their shorter wheelbase, and can squeeze through tight traffic gaps more easily, while a long (or heavy) ride needs extra room to swing the back end around.

Graphics

With a fixed bird’s-eye camera, the low-poly city is filled with police cars (that’s your fault!), motorcycles, cash bundles, roadblocks, as well as logging trucks.

Buildings and closed roads leave absolutely no room for error. While the vehicles up ahead are mostly easy to see (despite being lit by street lighting), you might find yourself crashing into the occasional dark-colored car or a speeding bike that appears out of nowhere, and you can expect to explode into a massive fireball when it’s game over.

How to Play Street Escape

Initial Setup

The main menu is a welcome change from other browser games, featuring a car key with a fob for the selection buttons.

Settings lets you change the music and enter your name that’ll appear on the leaderboards, while separate icons open the leaderboards (with daily, weekly, monthly, and all-time rankings) or let you take a look at what’s in the garage.

Open the garage, and it looks like a set of vehicle sales ads. Swiping (or scrolling) lets you switch between each car, with its price, cash bonus, mystery requirement, and (seemingly unexplained) checkpoint label displayed alongside it.

Your free ELENORADO is ready right away, so you can begin your first run without buying anything. You’ll get to rob a bank immediately, which is an ideal primer for your bank balance!

Getting Started

Click ‘Play’, and the game says, “Let’s rob some bank, shall we?” Umm.. Okay? Before you know it, the bank explodes, cash flies into your car, and the short tutorial tells you to tap once for a right turn and once for a left.

From there, the clearly shown route up ahead explains which way the car is gonna go. You only control the moment it’ll initiate each skid. Don’t worry too much about getting the cash bundles perfectly, as they collect automatically, which lets you hold a safe line instead of introducing your getaway car to a bus (well, not just yet, anyway!).

For fans of the legendary Drift Boss (or its motorbike game sibling, Moto Boss), where tapping and releasing guides your vehicle along an empty zigzag road, it’ll all feel super familiar. Game Modes

There’s just one endless single-player chase. Every successful corner adds a “drift point” to the current run (which produces your eventual top score), and it only resets when you crash into traffic, a building, or a closed road. Each attempt uses sudden death, so one mistake totals your car and gets you arrested.

The opening streets give you enough time to understand how the physics feel, but the momentum gradually builds alongside the traffic.

Soon, the simple, wider roads lead into single-lane alleys, the once-innocent traffic vehicles surprise you at breakneck speeds, the police keep returning when you thought you lost them all, and it only gets crazier the further you progress.

If you’ve enjoyed the top-down getaway/police chase antics, Escape Road City 2 offers a similar experience, but with total freedom to abandon a wreck, run, swim, parachute, and hijack almost anything nearby. Escape Road 3 goes even further, with 93 vehicles and 31 (newly introduced) characters that you’ll get to take across city, desert, farmland, and ocean areas, with a huge selection of challenges. Bank Robberies

While this looks like a game mode (shown in the top-left of the main menu), the ‘Bank robbery available’ just means that the next run triggers another explosion with an immediate bonus payout.

The bonuses arrive regularly at first, but the wait time often stretches beyond an hour. It’s helpful for early purchases, but the normal cash bundles and vehicle bonuses will do most of the work once the generous opening spell ends.

Leaderboards

This isn’t a game mode, but it’s a welcome addition. Your best score (the maximum corners you nail without crashing) sits below the cash counter, and separates rankings into daily, weekly, monthly, and all-time tables. Be sure to enter your nickname in the settings box before chasing them, unless you want your finest run credited to whatever default you get lumped with.

Two alternative games from the same team (that are perfect for refining your skills for this one) offer their own approach to leaderboards. Tap Drift is a Guitar Hero-style drifter, where the 28-car roster offers separate multipliers, passive earnings, and speed stats, turning the garage into part of the leaderboard strategy.

Arcade Glide attaches your car on a rope to corner anchors instead, then adds 100 challenges and a 48-car garage around the same four ranking periods.

For something totally different, it’s worth checking out Drift Arena, where you’ll participate in wager-based drift ghost battles judged by angle, smoke, near-misses, and tire use. The main similarities are the top-down view, auto-acceleration, and trying not to crash!

Car Selection

The garage contains 21 vehicles, but some are hidden at the start, appearing as question marks with a required number of successful turns. Reaching that score reveals the car rather than handing it over (I learned this the hard way!), so you still need enough cash to buy them… Yay(!)

Expect to see amusing names like CO-LIN RALLY, ASTOMIC CB9, NIGHT RIDER, and LIGHTNING MCKING, which any gearhead will recognize the amusing nod to. There is enough silliness here to make scrolling the garage entertaining without needing a breakdown of every single vehicle.

The cheapest (BEETLE, if you can guess that one…) starts at just 2,000 while offering a 50% cash bonus. The most expensive is the tank at a whopping 700,000. You’ll soon see how much grinding that’ll require!

Each one mentions a checkpoint label, but I can’t figure out what that means for the life of me. I nailed a score of more than 120 corners and never managed to venture outside New York, so I’m probably missing something painfully obvious with the laser focus required.

On a positive note, I landed second on the all-time leaderboard, though. Okay, the game is brand new (and I’ll probably be near the bottom by the time you read this), but lemme have my moment!

It’s gotta be said that even with a 50% bonus, it’s still a grind. After more than 55 consecutive corners, I only earned a little over 1,000 cash, so buying a useful earner can be smarter than immediately chasing your favorite ride initially.

When you get beyond 100 turns, the later streets scatter four or five cash bundles on the same stretch of road, but reaching the Tank will still require serious patience.

If the grinding gets a bit much, Madalin Stunt Cars 3 is a breath of fresh air in comparison, with more than 60 cars available immediately (nothing to unlock), which you can then take into huge online maps filled with ramps, loops, and various destructible props.

Tuning & Customization

There’s no tuning or customization here. Drift Hunters Pro is an ideal alternative if this is what you’re after, pairing ten golden-era JDM cars with online tandem lobbies and tracks ranging from snowy touge roads to a tight dockyard.

Advanced Tips & Tricks

You’ll often need to initiate earlier than you think

The rear-end needs time (and room) to swing around before it settles into its new direction. Initiating slightly early usually pays off, especially on narrow roads where the wall leaves almost no margin for correction.

Keep your eye on how much space the vehicle needs on the wider streets to get an idea, especially when you begin unlocking new ones.

Plan to set yourself up for the next turn

Landing on the correct side of the road puts you alongside vehicles traveling at a similar speed (or maybe an empty street if you’re lucky) and typically leaves a clearer setup for the next corner. The wrong side can look open during the slide, then you might suddenly have a traffic car appear outta nowhere.

Encourage the cops to crash behind you for breathing room

The NYPD follow closely enough that a sharp turn across heavy traffic can wipe them out while you escape.

Look for a gap, commit, and let the police discover the truck you narrowly avoided. They return quickly, but at least it gives you a few calmer corners.

Police Chase Drifter turns this tactic into a 20-level campaign with full steering, car health, money-bag objectives, and police that can be baited into buildings, signs, and one another.

Cash bundles have a generous pickup range

Don’t worry about getting close to the bundles, as you pick them up automatically, so you can focus on keeping the car on the safer route instead.

The semi-trailer offers a welcome gap, but the wheels can ruin the shortcut

There’s enough clearance to drive below some of the long trailers, and pulling it off feels awesome. Just make sure you aim for the open center and keep away from the wheels, which occupy more of the gap than you might think from the top-down camera.

Cash bonuses make the next purchase easier

The early payouts are low, so consider prioritizing a car with a better bonus percentage before saving for your favorites. The Beetle’s low price and 50% boost are a useful first step compared to the 0% on the starter car.
