We already see self-driving cars so you can only imagine what the future has in store for us. If you love cars, then here are the top five automotive technologies coming in the next ten years.

#1. Level 3 or 4 autonomy

The future of self-driving cars is inevitable. There are already self-driving inventions, which are making their way to the roads. However, we still have not reached the level of autonomy where we can hail an autonomous Uber or a taxi. According to the Society of Automotive Engineers, there are six different levels of independence ranging from 0-5.

  1. Level 0 includes cars that are not autonomous at all.
  2. Level 1 is made of cars which share systems with the driver.
  3. Level 2 is made up of cars that have all internal systems which make a vehicle — for instance, Tesla Autopilot 2.
  4. Level 3 cars are autonomous in all aspects. A driver can sit back, and the car can drive itself — for instance, the Audi A8L.
  5. Level 4 autonomy cars do not even require a driver to be around for them to function.
  6. Level 5 vehicles are like robotic vehicles.

There are companies which are making huge steps which will see us at level 3 or 4 in the next six years.

#2. Micromobility

Micromobility is the current form of transport which prevalent in metropolitan cities. It can be defined as vehicles which weigh less than 500kg and travel at less than 15 miles per hour. Electric scooters and e-bikes are some examples of Micromobility. In the future, Micromobility does not have to be limited to the current capacity of one or two people. With invention such as Toyota i-Road, they are the future to minimize traffic.

#3. Electric charging technology

Electric motor vehicles are the future for most cars. Therefore there is a need for electric charging stations. It is estimated that there are 18,000 electric charging stations in the US. However, they are still not enough to meet the future demand for electric vehicles. Also, there might be a chance for wireless charging with top brands such as Nissan and Mercedes, revealing their cars have the capability of wireless charging.  However, for both technologies to become a reality, it will take a lot of time, plus it will be costly.

#4. Car sensors

Vehicles of today have been designed with technology which helps them to perceive the road. This ranges from cameras, ultrasound sensors, radar, and LiDAR.  It is predicted that in the future, these technologies will be infused together, and automobiles will be able to predict the next destination.

#5. Communication

Cars of the future will be able to communicate with one another wirelessly.  This will help minimize traffic and road accidents.
