Nissan is best known for its sports-car offerings in the marketplace. When they intended to target the luxury market, they knew they’d struggle with being taken seriously by those typically opting for their hugely-popular German rivals such as BMW.
So, the Japanese manufacturer returned to the drawing board and created an entirely new brand, which would be far better suited to this fresh target market, and Infiniti was born.
Gone was the refined, harsh ride we know and love from Nissan. In its place were style, comfort, and modern-day gadgets.
After the lesser-known first (P10) and second-generation (P11) G-series failed to impress the market, the 350Z’s sibling, the G35, finally brought attention to the brand they’d set out to achieve.
The Infiniti G35 immediately scooped the Motor Trend Car of the Year award in 2003 before being nominated for the North American Car of the Year.
It also featured in the Car and Driver Ten Best list for two years, throughout 2003 and 2004.

G37 Handling Upgrades
Although it’s easy to get tempted with chasing substantial power figures from the VQ37VHR right away, it’s easy to overlook handling upgrades, which we feel should always be the first consideration, alongside weight saving.
Despite the G37 receiving many handling upgrades over its earlier sibling, there’s still a lot of room for improvement. This is where aftermarket suspension comes in.
You may be concerned that suspension upgrades sound like an enormous job, but that’s certainly not true.
You’ll have more work to do if you opt for lowering springs over coilovers since a coilover upgrade provides a convenient, all-in-one swap for Infiniti’s OEM suspension setup, providing adjustability to achieve the perfect ride height.
On the other hand, with lowering springs, you’ll need to remove the original springs, which can sometimes be a terrifying prospect, before re-fitting the new ones.
Although some may associate coilovers with slamming your car to the ground and scraping your way to the local meet, this isn’t always the case.
Coilovers are fully adjustable, allowing an impressive suspension adjustment for the price.
For example, if you want to improve your handling, we recommend dropping the G37 around 20mm on your coilovers. This is perfectly safe without flaring the arches on your G with the correct wheel setup. If necessary, you can consider adding a slight tweak to the wheel camber for wider wheels.
Doing so will improve the handling, reduce body roll, and allow you to use fine-tuning to achieve the correct suspension settings to maximize grip.
We highly recommend getting a professional to set up your tracking correctly, and you can easily choose between a drift, fast-road, track, or even drag setup.
If you plan to improve your G37’s performance, you must be able to put the power down efficiently, and grip is particularly vital when drifting.
For those of you that haven’t got the budget for coilovers just yet, you can always consider lowering springs.
However, our experience has shown that most owners upgrade to coilovers shortly after, so we’d recommend going straight down that route to save doing things again later.
Unfortunately, ‘buy cheap, buy twice’ is undoubtedly valid for the tuning scene!

If you’re on a budget, then the Manzo Dual G37 Exhaust provides good performance for the price, but we’d personally save up a few extra bucks for a superior product.
G37 Test Pipes
Test Pipes will completely replace the G37’s catalytic converters, which are incredibly restrictive in stock form.
However, be warned, these will not only make your car significantly louder, but they’re also likely to fail the emissions laws regarding inspection, as they’re illegal in most states and countries.
The positives are that these are cheap, straightforward bolt-on modifications, often providing power gains of around 10hp.
There are certainly not many products on the market capable of providing as much power for a couple of hundred bucks.
Although they’re not entirely convenient, they’re worth the effort regarding performance and ensuring that your VQ engine can extract the gases as freely as possible.

They’re one of the cheapest offerings on our list, but thankfully they haven’t compromised on quality, which is why the Berk test pipes are the most popular non-resonated cats available.
Sure, they’ll be loud since they’re a straight-through pipe, but they’re well made and sound incredible while providing significant power gains.
Headers complete the perfect exhaust setup for optimal airflow alongside the intake and cat-back exhaust, providing the final piece to your bolt-on exhaust puzzle when freeing up the untapped potential.
If you opt for long-tube headers, these will override your cats, which will once again potentially fail emissions testing.

Headers are notoriously challenging to fit on the G37, and we would expect the job to take around six hours, even with the right equipment and a qualified mechanic.

G37 Wheel Upgrades
We understand that you want your car to look its best immediately. In all fairness, a set of aftermarket wheels will not only improve the looks of your G, but they’ll also provide weight-saving benefits while potentially enhancing the grip and handling.

Our recommendation for wheels for the G37 is to stick with a sensible 18 or 19-inch setup with low-profile tires.
